South Coast to Shetland: Jo’s First Big Campervan Adventure

South Coast to Shetland: Jo’s First Big Adventure in Vino the Campervan

A New Beginning with Vino

For Jo, the journey into campervan life started not with a local weekend break, but with a bold plan: driving from the south coast of England all the way to the Shetland Isles for her first Campervan Adventure.

Her newly purchased Mercedes Viano campervan, affectionately named Vino, was more than just a set of wheels. It was freedom, comfort, and the key to a whole new chapter of exploration.

She chose a Mercedes because of her past positive experiences with the brand, and because the availability of spare parts across Europe made it a practical decision. With a rich burgundy finish and a pop-top roof for added space, Vino wasn’t just functional, it looked the part too.

Hitting the Road North

Jo’s first big test with Vino wasn’t a gentle weekend at a nearby campsite. Instead, she aimed straight for the long road north, heading to a special reunion – marking ten years since her time living and working on the remote sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia

From one of the world’s most southerly outposts to the most northerly of the British Isles, the gathering was set in Shetland. With Finn, her lovable Jack Russell–Cavapoo cross, by her side, Jo embraced campervan life wholeheartedly, packing up and driving to Aberdeen to catch the ferry.

The drive was surprisingly smooth, and any nerves about tackling such a big first adventure soon gave way to excitement. “It was just so easy,” Jo explained. “Everything worked exactly as I needed it to, and Finn settled in straight away.”

Crossing to Shetland

The next stage of the journey was the NorthLink ferry crossing from Aberdeen to Lerwick, Shetland’s main town. This overnight sailing is the lifeline for the islands, carrying locals, tourists, and supplies across the North Sea. For Jo, it marked the beginning of a true adventure.

With Vino safely stowed below deck, Jo and Finn could relax and enjoy the anticipation of arriving somewhere completely new.

Discovering Unst: Britain’s Northernmost Island

Once on Shetland, Jo made her way further north still, eventually reaching Unst, the most northerly inhabited island in the UK. Known for its dramatic cliffs, Viking heritage, and seabird colonies, Unst is about as far from the bustle of southern England as you can get.

For Jo, it wasn’t just about the scenery, though. She had arranged to meet old friends, and the campervan gave her the perfect way to reconnect without worrying about accommodation or schedules.

“Being able to just park up, make a cup of tea, and be ready for whatever the day held was such a joy,” she said.

Unst is a place that captures the imagination and is perfect for a campervan adventure. The island is home to the famous Muckle Flugga lighthouse, perched on a rocky outcrop at the edge of the North Atlantic, and Hermaness National Nature Reserve, where puffins and gannets nest in their thousands. It’s wild, beautiful, and unforgettable.

A Dog-Friendly Campervan Adventure

Travelling with Finn proved easier than Jo had expected. Campervan life meant he always had his familiar bed and space, whether they were on a ferry, parked at a friend’s house, or exploring a new beach.

“He loved it,” Jo laughed. “Everywhere we stopped became his new territory, and people were so friendly. Having a dog with you just seems to open up conversations.”

The campervan’s pop-top gave Finn extra space to explore inside, and the fitted gas heater kept things cosy on chillier nights up north.

More Than Just Travel

Although the Shetland reunion was the reason for the trip, Jo quickly realised that owning a campervan was about more than just reaching a destination. It was the freedom to set her own pace, the reassurance of having everything she needed on board, and the ability to turn a journey into an adventure.

“It gave me independence,” she said. “Instead of being tied to hotels or trains, I could just go where I wanted, when I wanted. It’s a whole new way of thinking about travel.”

Why Shetland Was the Perfect First Trip

Driving to Shetland might not be everyone’s idea of a gentle introduction to campervan life, but for Jo it was ideal. The long drive tested Vino’s reliability and comfort, the ferry crossing added an element of adventure, and Shetland itself rewarded her with stunning scenery, quiet roads, and the space to find her campervan rhythm.

And because Vino was fitted out by Free Spirit Campervans, Jo could rely on everything working seamlessly, from cooking to heating to sleeping arrangements. That gave her the confidence to focus on the experience rather than worrying about practicalities.

Campervan Adventure Travel Tips from Jo’s Experience

For anyone thinking of making a similar trip, Jo’s story highlights a few valuable points:

  • Plan the ferry early: Sailings to Shetland can book up months in advance, especially in summer.
  • Pack for all weather: Even in June, Shetland can switch from sunshine to wind and rain in a matter of minutes.
  • Keep it flexible: One of the joys of campervan life is not being tied to rigid bookings.
  • Take the dog: If you have a canine companion, Shetland is a brilliant, dog-friendly destination.

Looking Back

By the time Jo and Finn returned south, they had not only attended a memorable reunion but also discovered a new lifestyle. The trip set the tone for many more adventures to come.

“I never once felt like it was too much,” Jo said. “It was the opposite, it made me want to get out more and more.”
