Interview with a Free Spirit Campervan Owner – A Journey of Comfort, Freedom, and Adventure

Free Spirit Campervan Owner

What inspired you to purchase a campervan, and why did you choose Free Spirit Campervans?

I lost my husband 10 years ago, and we had always said we would get a campervan together. We’d been camping for years, and I had a checklist of things I wanted in a campervan. After my husband’s passing, I had some savings and decided after a number of things happened that the universe was giving me a message to go ahead with the purchase. My first campervan was a converted SWB Viano, which I purchased from a friend about three years ago, they had originally bought the camper from Free Spirit Campervans.

I went to Free Spirit Campervans to discuss it, and I ended up swapping my old van for a newer one. I love the spaciousness of the new LWB Viano and it feels incredibly roomy. The LWB model provides much more space, which is great for my lifestyle. The build quality is fantastic, and I really loved everything about it.

I chose Free Spirit because my friend, who had the old van, had always been happy with it, and I trusted its build quality. Adrian and Ian have been invaluable every step of the way, offering excellent service and ensuring the van was built exactly as I wanted.

Please tell us a little about your background and what travel experiences you hope to have with your new campervan.

I’ve been camping all my life. My husband used to enjoy tent camping, and for me, it was always a great way to detox from a high-pressure job. However, when I tried camping alone, it wasn’t the same, and it made me realise that I needed to make things easier. Now, I can wake up, think, “I’m going to the beach today,” and enjoy spontaneous moments with a cup of coffee, a bacon butty, and a good book in the camper.

The camper perfectly fits my lifestyle. It’s so easy to prepare it, and I can visit friends or sleep in it on their driveways. The van’s convenience and spontaneity make it perfect for me.

What features or qualities of the campervan stood out to you during your initial decision-making process?

The extra length of the van was crucial for me, especially because I have dogs. I needed additional storage space, and the longer model really offered that. I love the pop-top feature, the build quality, and the smooth drive. I had considered other vans before, but this one’s comfort and speed stood out.

How was the process of purchasing the campervan with Free Spirit Campervans? Did you feel well-informed and supported?

Absolutely, the process was seamless. When I bought the second campervan, it was on impulse, and it had yet to be converted. But when I went to Free Spirit Campervans, they took the time to explain everything to me and show me exactly what I was getting into. They discussed the various conversion options, the features of the Viano, and the customisation possibilities. I opted not to have a bed in the roof, for example, and I chose a brilliant, bright white exterior colour, which I preferred. They kept me informed and involved throughout, and I’ve recommended them to several people since.

How did Free Spirit Campervans help you choose the right campervan for your needs?

I kind of knew what I wanted and didn’t look at other models because I was already familiar with the Viano from my previous van. Free Spirit Campervans didn’t pressure me to look at anything else; they simply helped me make the right choice for my needs.

What was your experience with the customer service team throughout the buying process?

The customer service was brilliant. Adrian and Ian were always incredibly helpful, answering all my questions and offering advice when needed.

What made you decide that owning a campervan was the right choice for you compared to renting one?

I’ve always loved the freedom of having my own space. Owning a campervan allows me to be spontaneous and travel at my own pace. It’s so much more convenient than renting, especially since I can use it for multiple trips throughout the year.

How do you envision using your campervan for your adventures? Are there specific trips or activities you’re most excited about?

I use the van primarily for dog shows, as I finished work a year ago and now focus on showing my dog. It’s been a game-changer because I no longer have to rush at the crack of dawn. I can stop en route, have a break, and enjoy the experience much more. I spend a couple of nights a week in the camper during the summer months—about two-thirds of the week. For example, I spent five nights at Crufts.

I travel around the UK, and I’m excited to go further afield soon, though I haven’t yet been to Europe. I’m looking forward to exploring more.

How has owning a campervan changed how you approach travel and holidays?

Owning the camper has definitely made me more spontaneous with my trips. The setup is quick and easy, and I feel at peace the moment I step into the van. It’s my little oasis—a calm space that allows me to relax and unwind. The dogs love it, too, and we can just sit back and watch the world go by.

What has been the most surprising or exciting aspect of owning a campervan so far?

One of the most surprising and exciting aspects of owning a campervan has been the sense of community within the van community. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how people are always willing to help, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some truly lovely individuals along the way. It’s reassuring to know that there’s always a friendly face around if you ever need assistance.

As a Free Spirit Campervan owner, can you share any memorable moments or trips you’ve had in your new campervan?

One of my most memorable trips in my new campervan was to Crufts, where I experienced a cosy and warm retreat despite the freezing temperatures outside. I’ve also had some truly lovely experiences at peaceful campsites, like one in Bath, where I sat outside watching rabbits hopping around my feet while enjoying my dinner.

What do you love most about your campervan’s design and layout?

I love the spontaneity that comes with the camper. I’ve seen everything from pod caravans to very expensive motorhomes, but I love the subtlety of my van—it’s a stealth camper. I can go anywhere and do anything without drawing attention, and it’s so easy to get up and go. The fridge works so well and is never off, thanks to the solar panel, which I got Free Spirit to fit, and it means I can go off-grid as long as like and when I head off, my fridge is always cold. It’s the perfect size and has everything I need.

How have you customised your campervan to fit your personal style or travel needs?

I’ve added insulated screens to make it more private, but I like to keep it looking non-descript. I’ve also added personal touches to make it feel more like home.

What kind of preparation or planning goes into a typical trip with your campervan?

Now that I’ve refined what I take with me, not much planning is needed. The fridge is always on due to the solar panels, and I always have tea and coffee. I top up the food and clothes and am good to go. It’s all about keeping it straightforward and spontaneous.

As a Free Spirit Campervan owner, what advice would you give someone considering purchasing a campervan for the first time?

Just do it! I wish I had bought one sooner. It’s been a fantastic decision, and I’m so glad I went for it.

How does the campervan perform on the road? Is it easy to drive and comfortable for long journeys?

It’s brilliant. It’s comfortable, easy to drive, and surprisingly fast for its size. The driving experience is solid, and I feel confident on long journeys.

How has your campervan changed the way you experience the outdoors or nature?

It’s opened up so many more opportunities to explore. I can travel further and stay overnight wherever I want, giving me more choices and flexibility when discovering new places.

What features do you find most useful for a comfortable stay while on the road?

The fridge and solar panels are game-changers. They make life on the road so much easier, and I can always find somewhere nice to stop and relax.

Do you have any tips for first-time campervan owners on maintaining or caring for their vehicles?

Take less stuff than you think you need at first! Over time, you’ll refine what you bring with you. I keep a logbook of places I’ve visited and try to keep the campervan as organised as possible. Don’t expect everything to be perfect on your first trip—embrace the learning curve and enjoy the process.

What are your plans for future trips, and how do you see your campervan contributing to those adventures?

I’m excited to tackle the NC500 in Scotland and am planning a trip to Italy with my dogs. The campervan will play a huge part in these adventures, allowing me to travel more comfortably and spontaneously. I love how easy it is to travel with my dogs, and my sister-in-law now has a Free Spirit Campervan, too, with a conversion for dog crates under the bed.
